Stop Corruption in the Criminal Justice System

The justice system is supposed to ensure everyone is treated equally without bias and gets access to timely justice. But prevalent corruption in the US criminal justice system has a corrosive effect on society.

This is the reason why innocent people like Prentice Ponds suffer in imprisonment without getting a chance at a fair trial.

How Corrupt Justice System Affects the Community

Corruption is the leading reason why legal offices and the police force violate human rights. From bribery to extortion, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and fraud, there are many ways how corrupt officers in the justice system make it difficult for innocent people to get a fair trial.

Therefore, corruption ruins the dynamics of a society, depriving people of their basic rights. Police officers and other officials associated with the criminal justice system can treat people unfairly without accountability.

What Went Wrong in Prentice Ponds Case

The case of Prentice Ponds is an example of how a corrupt system can affect a person’s life.

The innocent man from Tulsa is serving Life plus 25 years in prison on charges of insurance fraud and robbery. Not only is the sentencing unfair, but Mr. Ponds didn’t get a chance to prove his innocence despite having sufficient evidence in his favor.

Baseless Complaint and Arrest

Prentice Ponds was accused of filing a fake insurance claim and assaulting the insurance adjuster. However, many critical facts were ignored in his case.

  • Prentice Ponds was attacked in his own home

  • He defended himself from the attacker (insurance adjuster)

  • He reported the incident and gave the insurance adjuster water and paper towels for his injury

  • After making an initial complaint, the insurance adjuster dropped the case

  • The case was reopened a few months later and Prentice Ponds was arrested even though the case was dropped earlier

  • He didn’t get the approval to show evidence that the complaint was invalid.

Biased Court Verdict

After the unfair arrest, Prentice Ponds was treated unfairly in court. The defendant suspected the judge in the case was biased because of their previous association with the State Insurance Fund.

Prentice Ponds appealed for another fair trial, but his voice goes unheard. Since his imprisonment in 2017, he has been waiting for a fair trial to prove his innocence.

Prentice Ponds Needs Our Support

Prentice Ponds is a family man and his family members are still awaiting his return. As a community, we need to support Prentice Ponds and his family.

A few months ago, NAACP arranged a rally to raise a voice in his support. Gloria’s Angels organization is also fighting for the cause. But we need more community support to bring the attention of concerned authorities to his case.

Prentice Ponds was wrongly accused of the crimes and is serving such an unreasonable imprisonment term for a crime he didn’t commit.
