NAACP Tulsa Branch Has Elected a New Leadership Team
NAACP leadership elections for the Tulsa branch were held Saturday, 5th November, and members have elected a fresh and motivated team to advocate for equal rights for everyone.
I’m excited for the opportunity to serve the community as VP of NAACP Tulsa and congratulate the new leadership that will take charge on 1st January 2023. Here is the organization’s new leadership team:
President – Francetta Mays
First Vice President – Angela Chambers
Secretary – Anna Marie Gaines
Treasurer – Arthetha Pouncil
Executive Members – Jane Malone and Pleas Thompson
The Direction of NAACP Under the New Leadership
The newly elected team is excited to work for the betterment of people. Under the leadership of President Francetta Mays, one area we intend to continue to focus on is criminal justice reform.
Oklahoma has a high imprisonment rate. Every now and then, too often we hear about wrongfully imprisoned people that were denied a fair trial. As a community organization, we believe it’s the responsibility of NAACP to raise voice for innocent people and stand up for justice.
The reason why we announced our nomination was to do something for the community and raise a collective voice for reforms in the criminal justice system. Francetta Mays and I, Angela Chambers, got involved with NAACP due to the case of Prentice Ponds and we will make the most of this platform to seek justice for him and other wrongfully convicted people in Oklahoma.
Prentice Ponds was charged with robbery and insurance fraud. Though he has evidence to prove his innocence, the court declared him guilty and sentenced him to Life+25 years. This type of huge sentencing is unheard of in these types of cases.
