A Timeline of the Heartbreaking Incident

Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man was driving towards his home on January 7th when he was stopped by the Scorpion unit. What started as a traffic stop turned deadly soon after.

Stopped at the East Raines Road and Ross Road intersection, officers forced him out of the vehicle and pushed him to the ground. The officers were overly aggressive and were shouting threats. When one of them tried to tase Nichols who was on the ground, he broke free out of fear and started running.

They followed him and caught him when he was just 60 yards away from his mother’s house. This is when they started beating him and sprayed him with pepper spray. Tyre Nichols painfully called for his mom, but the violence didn’t stop. Eventually, he was handcuffed and dragged to the police car though he slumped to the ground due to being critically injured.

Two medics arrived a few minutes later, but it took them over 15 minutes to attempt to give him first aid. When the ambulance arrived, he was already short of breath and was moved to St. Francis Hospital. The heartbreaking news came out on January 10th that Tyre Nichols couldn’t survive and lost his life, leaving behind his grieving family including his 4-year-old son.

The involved six Memphis officers were suspended and charged with second-degree murder and kidnapping.

Police Brutality Needs to Stop

1,905 black people lost their lives to police brutality and shootings in 2022 alone with most of them in the age bracket of 20-39 years.

We can’t lose more precious lives to this rotten system. It’s time to openly talk about such cases and make the police force accountable for their actions.
