Tulsa Branch Received a Warm Welcome at NAACP State Quarterly Meeting

NAACP State Quarterly Meeting was held this past Saturday, February 4th, 2023. The President of NAACP Tulsa branch#6143, Francetta Mays, attended the meeting along with Vice President Angela K. Chambers.

The leadership of the local NAACP branch received a warm welcome from the State President and other branch Presidents who were in attendance. It was an exciting moment for us to meet the State President and other branch presidents in person.

Oklahoma NAACP has created a platform for collaboration and brings attention to important issues in the community.

Discussion Points at the Quarterly State Meeting

During the meeting, State President Anthony Douglas discussed the state budget and goals of NAACP Oklahoma for the next quarter. Further, he provided an overview of the financial situation of the state NAACP and how it plans to address critical community problems.

Branch presidents also shared insightful reports about the issues in communities as well as any events or activities they have planned for months ahead.

Tulsa Branch President, Francetta Mays, talked about the challenges facing the new leadership of Tulsa branch#6143 and how they intend to solve those issues. With the Inaugural Services & Fundraising Gala just around the corner, the President invited the attendees to the Gala on Saturday, February 11 at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel downtown Tulsa.

An important issue raised during the meeting was the impact of COVID-19 on the education system.

The pandemic affected schools not only in the US but around the globe. However, the children of color suffered the most and had a big 2-year gap in education. It’s because they weren’t ready for remote learning and didn’t have access to state-of-art technology including computers and the internet.

Thus, it’s important to pay attention to this challenge and bridge this 2-year gap as well as arrange funding to equip students with the technology and equipment they need.

Attending quarterly State meetings offers the opportunity for branches to stay informed about state initiatives and plans of other NAACP branches. If branch Presidents are unable to attend meetings due to prior engagements, they can send a representative.

Mega Community Distribution Volunteer Activity

The State meeting went on from 9 AM-11:22 AM. Then NAACP members went outside to volunteer at Mega Community Distribution from 11:30 AM onward. It was a charitable activity arranged by Ebenezer Baptist Church and World Vision in collaboration with Oklahoma NAACP.

The purpose of this event was to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Clara Luper and celebrate Black History Month in full spirit.

Four trucks of 43 feet were arranged by donors and necessities such as food, furniture items, home furnishings, and other day-to-day items were distributed among people.

The NAACP Oklahoma state meeting was a productive event that brought attention to important issues. It presented an excellent opportunity to connect with Presidents of other branches and create a collaborative environment.

Tickets for the Inaugural & Service Fundraising Gala are available on Eventbrite through Thursday, February 9, 2023.
